JPII & Al Qaeda

That day in Manila when Al Qaeda wanted to kill the Pope

It was a banal incident, a fire in an apartment, a fire in an apartment that caused Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’ s plans. Blueprints for the assassination of John Paul II were found alongside plans to blow up American planes mid flight.

But at the time the episode had little effect on the Popes visit to Manila. On the 15th, a day of splendid sunshine, the John Paul II celebrated World Youth Day, before one of the biggest crowds ever to attend a public event: 4 perhaps 5 million people. No one has ever been able to calculate the exact numbers of people who gathered together in prayer and celebration.
