A forerunner of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, the Clergy Consultation Service was a network of more than 1,400 ministers and rabbis who, despite the risks of public censure and criminal prosecution, helped thousands of women obtain safe abortions in the years before the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade making abortion legal. At that time, as many as 1 million women underwent dangerous illegal back-alley or self-induced abortions each year, without safety standards and often in unsanitary and dangerous conditions.
