Benedict XVI- "Serve the Lord with Detachment from the World"

At the Holy Father's meeting with Zambia Episcopal Conference in their five-yearly "ad limina" visit he stated: SERVE THE LORD WITH DETACHMENT FROM THE WORLD

"I encourage you," the Holy Father continued, "to urge your people to dedicate themselves to prayer and holiness, discovering the treasure of a life built on faith in Christ. ... The light of holiness that shines forth in those who have discovered this treasure is enkindled at the moment of Baptism. In Baptism Christ liberates the believer from the dominion of sin, freeing him from an existence filled with fear and superstition and calling him to a new life."

Pope Benedict then called on the bishops to instruct the faithful "in the value and the practice of prayer, especially liturgical prayer, where in a sublime way the Church is united with Christ the High Priest in His eternal intercession for the salvation of the world. Moreover, the Catholic Church encourages the faithful to practise popular forms of piety. Therefore, always teach your people the value of the intercession of the saints, who are the great friends of Jesus, and particularly the special intercession of Mary, His Mother, who is always attentive to our
needs."

He then went on to consider the prelates' duty to guide the faithful "on the way that leads to sanctity ... with wise advice, unwavering resolve and paternal affection," and highlighted the importance of guidance "in your dealings with your brother priests, who at times can be led astray by the many temptations of contemporary society. As pastors and fathers to your co-workers in the vineyard, you must always communicate to them the joy of serving the Lord with a proper detachment from the things of this world."

"We believe that the Church is holy. When you urge your priests to live holy lives in accordance with their calling, when you preach generous love and fidelity in marriage and when you exhort everybody to practise the works of mercy, remind them of the Lord's own words: 'You are the light of the world.' ... Show Christ's compassion especially for the poor, for refugees, for the sick and for all who suffer.

Our prayers should continue in preparation for our Holy Father as he prepares for his trip to Turkey. Prayers of protection for all in Turkey, most especially for those that are working diligently on safety measures before and during Benedict XVI's visit.

I don't know about you-but, what happened to just contacting your doctor and his office (00ps, I forgot after hours -they're not available; oh, their answering service; oh yeah, they won't have your chart in front of them) after speaking the friend or relative that's accompanying you?

Most people I know usually show up in the emergency room with their spouse,other relative, or friend. It's not enough that they can provide contact information? I know, I know, what about those that live by themselves? Don't they usually have others that look in on them? Oh, but won't we all have our drivers license that will be able to provide enough information too? Gosh, those medical emergency alert bracelets that people wear will become so obsolete! Sounds like someone is getting knocked off the market. No, we won't need to look for that emergency alert bracelet on the wrist---no-- we'll use a machine over her arm to find her medical problems from her chip. Right.
So according to the photo in the upper right hand space under "Just for Kids"--the alerts emergency care-givers --" Diabetes"-and a phone number. I wonder who belongs to that number? A national database or registry? Aren't they taken care of then? Why is there a redundancy of information storage here?

These are prettier then a chip. These are more expensive because they are 'real' jewelry.

ABC-Offensive Again-"Ugly Betty"

And so the persecution continues. We need to continually offer up these sufferings and do so more fervently, to His Sacred Heart.

On this First Friday-Feast of the Sacred Heart I offer prayer for the offense against His Sacred Heart and His sons-His priests and the continue attack on the priesthood.

The ABC's new fall show-"Ugly Betty" -provided me the opportunity to change the channel and offer prayer for the Body of Christ. Salma Hayek -executive producer, went to far in last night's episode. She and another actor were a part of the embedded storyline. While "Betty" is busy on the phone, Betty's recently widowed father can be seen in his 'easy chair', watching television-a Spanish speaking program where the characters of the program are in dialog. The characters- a pregnant (unmarried) woman and priest (in collar) holding a bible and rosary. Their exchange begins with conversational confusion and accusation towards the priest-where she proclaims he is the father of her child. Of course the dialog was portrayed like Abbott and Costello dialog. When he finally understands that HE is the father of her child, they dash towards each other in a large embracewith his bible and rosary flopping around in the embrace. End of that scene and back to Betty.

So disgusting! It never really stops. This gratuitous scene was not needed AT ALL! I am truly disappointed in Salma Hayek for this scene and that she was the actual actress portraying the unmarried woman hugging and kissing a priest.

Examination of Conscience-Using the Beatitudes

Of course I consider the source (and publish date of 2002)--Pax Christi-Examination of Conscience based on the Beatitudes.

An examination of conscience is a way to hold ourselves accountable before God and each other for the evil we do and the good we do not do. Some refer to it as an examination of consciousness: scanning our motives, thoughts, and actions to detect our loyalty to or betrayal of the priorities of the reign of God. The delicate and difficult part in this process involves what we hold as our guide for accountability. For centuries the blueprint for good conduct was the list of Ten Commandments, until Jesus proposed a very different set of guidelines with the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1- 13).

Key word---the use of "was the list"....really? Whoa.
The question begs...what happened to the Ten Commandments? So, if we don't know that they exist then we can continue to sin? Oh, I forgot the author explains that the Beatitudes are to be used as a measure to accountability-not the Ten Commandments! Duh! NOT!

The Beatitudes would be fine for "the good we do not do", but let's not throw out the Ten Commandments too!

And....-33 years after Roe—even though abortion is a very common, necessary and important procedure for millions of women in the U.S.

Why not make the killing of an innocent child sound like a routine procedure---i.e. teeth cleaning. That way its much easier to justify your actions-MURDER!

My faith was influenced by my grandparents and by education within the family. Apart from the Chinese New Year, my family gave a lot of importance to Christmas. We Chinese Catholics live in a Communist, atheistic environment that denies, oppresses and derides religion. Although I received a Communist and atheistic education, my faith grew thanks to the witness of my grandparents and my family. Even during the Cultural Revolution, I remember that all my family would say the Rosary and Vespers together in secret, with the windows and doors closed: for more than 10 years, we spent Christmas night thus, without Mass and without priests.

When the court does convene, one case it will face this year is of importance to many religious Americans. The court will decide whether the law known as the Partial Birth Abortion Ban of 2003 is constitutional.

The court is being asked to determine if the law is acceptable even though it does not contain a health exception for the would-be mother. The decision will most likely be divided, and a key justice affecting the outcome will be Justice Anthony Kennedy, in his 19th year on the court, who has taken over the role of swing voter since Sandra Day O'Connor retired last year.

While the court already looked at the health exception in 2000 when it struck down a Nebraska law, the federal law, which was written differently than the state bill, may be treated differently by the court. Kennedy supported the Nebraska law in 2000, writing the minority dissent.

"There are certainly enough votes to flip the issue if Justice Kennedy continues to take the same position," said Georgetown University law professor Randy Barnett.

George Washington, he said, told Americans in his farewell address that "we cannot expect national prosperity without morality, and morality cannot be sustained without religious principles."

"What is religion's place in public life?" Wuerl asked. "Politics and faith are mingled because believers are also citizens. Both church and state are home to the very same people."

The lawsuit, which seeks no monetary damages, was filed in August in St. Croix County Circuit Court, Wisconsin (Court File No.06CV581). It asks a state judge to force America's 194 Catholic bishops to disclose the names of roughly 5,000 proven, admitted and credibly accused abusive priests in the US. The suit is being brought by the family of Dan O'Connell of Wisconsin,who, along with a co-worker, was shot and killed in February 2002 by a suspected pedophile priest who also owned guns and pornography.

Speaker calls growth in number of lay parish ministers a revolution

Two-thirds of parishes across the spectrum of Catholic life in the United States, from cities to suburbs to small towns, now employ lay parish ministers, he said."It is hard to fathom just how much parish ministry changed in the span of one generation," DeLambo said. "Lay parish ministers are (now) a common and accepted presence in parishes across the country. This, indeed, is a development of revolutionary proportions."

What happened to the priest's role in the parish? Why isn't he considered to be in charge? Because he doesn't have great management or finance skills? Or is it because he can abdicate his authority to lay people who (more than likely) have been poorly catechized thereby relieving him of the responsibility to fully shepherd his flock.
I wish as a mother -in my vocation, that I could say to my husband--"here honey, you get to do all the shopping, the laundry, car-pooling, etc. now." So, if he responds negatively, I'll inform him that I'm going to hire a driver, a laundress, and a shopper to do this work. Seems to me that this would not be a true acceptance of my vocation.

To make matters worse these lay people have not been "fed" the true teachings of the Catholic Church. Often they have received degrees or instruction from schools or colleges that have blatantly NOT followed the Magisterium.

"The challenge for church leaders will be to facilitate the education and formation of lay parish ministers," he added. U.S. Bishops to Vote on Strategic Plan With Restructured Committees, Smaller USCCB Staff

USCCB smaller?! Yeah, right!

The restructuring has been recommended by the Committee on Priorities and Plans, chaired by Archbishop Michael Sheehan of Santa Fe, NM. The committee, which is responsible for strategic planning, aims to create a more focused, smaller and less costly conference. The process follows a report from the USCCB Task Force on Activities and Resources that called for "a mechanism for Conference-wide strategic planning, implementation and assessment." Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington chaired the task force that produced the report adopted by the bishops in November 2004.
The restructuring involves reducing the current 68 committees, subcommittees and task forces of bishops to 34. Staff offices corresponding to the committees will be restructured, contributing to a 16 percent or $1.9 million reduction in the annual diocesan assessment toward the USCCB yearly budget. The conference budget for 2007 is $139 million, with $11.9 million, or nine percent, coming from the ssessment. The rest of the budget comes from national collections, government contracts, foundation grants and sales/royalties.

Wisconsin to Offer Free Stem Cell Licenses

Doyle hopes to attract jobs by giving permits to firms sponsoring research at Wisconsin institutions

Gov. Jim Doyle announced that Wisconsin would try to compete with richer, bigger states by using a tool that none of them have: embryonic stem cell patents. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, or WARF, will offer free, non-exclusive licenses to conduct embryonic stem cell research to companies that are sponsoring such research at Wisconsin non-profit and academic institutions, said Elizabeth Donley, special counsel to the foundation and executive director of WiCellResearch Institute. The institute is a WARF subsidiary set up to conduct stem cell research and train scientists and others in the field.

The hope is that the incentives will help Wisconsin attract companies engaged in embryonic stem cell research, so the state can create jobs and stay competitive,
she said.

Truly we don't pay enough attention to the archangels whose radiant love is burning incandescently around us at every moment of our waking and sleeping. Of course we can't see those divine flames with our eyes. It takes faith to see them. With faith we know that these strong, ravishing spiritual beings drive away evil by their very presence and exist only to serve us.

They exist to serve Father-God FIRST and then us. And do they ever!

Remember, to call on them to expedite and assist you in proclaiming God's Truth to others-all those you come in contact, i.e. before an important meeting, dealing with your children, speaking with your spouse. Include them in your morning offering and thank them in your evening prayers and reflection. They can and will go ahead of you to open hearts, just as St. Gabriel opened the Blessed Virgin Mary's heart as she was fearful and did not understand what the Archangel Gabriel was telling her. Of course ask Our Virgin Mother to intervene as well. Again, don't forget to thank them---by giving all honor, glory and praise to our Triune God!

"With great concern, the Holy See has followed the recent activities of Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, emeritus of Lusaka, Zambia, with his new association of married priests, spreading division and confusion among the
faithful.
"Church representatives of various levels have tried in vain to contact Archbishop Milingo in order to dissuade him from persisting in actions that provoke scandal, especially among the faithful who followed his pastoral
ministry in favor of the poor and the sick.
"Bearing in mind the understanding shown, also recently, by Peter's Successor towards this aged pastor of the Church, the Holy See has awaited with vigilant patience the evolution of events which, unfortunately, have led
Archbishop Milingo to a position of irregularity and of progressively open rupture of communion with the Church, first with his attempted marriage and then with the ordination of four bishops on Sunday, September 24, in Washington D.C., U.S.A.
"For this public act both Archbishop Milingo and the four ordinands have incurred excommunication 'latae sententiae,' as laid down in Canon 1382 of the Code of Canon Law. Moreover, the Church does not recognize, nor does she intend to recognize in the future, these ordinations and all ordinations deriving from them; and she considers the canonical status of the four supposed-bishops as being that they held prior to this ordination.The Apostolic See, attentive to the unity and peace of the flock of Christ, had hoped that the fraternal influence of people close to Archbishop Milingo would cause him to rethink and return to full communion with the Pope. Unfortunately the latest developments have made these hopes more unlikely.

"In a world marked by relativism and too often excluding the transcendence and universality of reason, we are in great need of an authentic dialogue between religions and between cultures, capable of assisting us, in a spirit of fruitful cooperation, to overcome all the tensions together.

"Continuing, then, the work undertaken by my predecessor Pope John Paul II," he added, "I sincerely pray that the relations of trust which have developed between Christians and Muslims over several years, will not only continue, but will develop further in a spirit of sincere and respectful dialogue, based on ever more authentic reciprocal knowledge which, with joy, recognizes the religious values that we have in common and, with loyalty, respects the differences.

Benedict XVI then highlighted how "the lessons of the past" must "help us to seek paths of reconciliation, in order to live with respect for the identity and freedom of each individual, with a view to fruitful co-operation in the service of all humanity. As Pope John Paul II said in his memorable speech to young people at Casablanca in Morocco: 'Respect and dialogue require reciprocity in all spheres, especially in that which concerns basic freedoms, more particularly religious freedom. They favor peace and agreement between peoples'."

The Holy Father concluded his address by expressing his profound conviction "that in the current world situation it is imperative that Christians and Muslims engage with one another in order to address the numerous challenges that present themselves to humanity, especially those concerning the defense and promotion of the dignity of the human person and of the rights ensuing from that dignity. When threats mount up against people and against peace, by recognizing the central character of the human person and by working with perseverance to see that human life is always respected, Christians and Muslims manifest their obedience to the Creator, Who wishes all people to live in the dignity that He has bestowed upon them."

Stem cells made from 'dead' human embryo

Scientists say they have created a stem cell line from a human embryo that had stopped developing naturally, and so was considered dead. Using such embryos might ease ethical concerns about creating such cells, they suggested.
One expert said the technique makes harvesting stem cells no more ethically troublesome than organ donation. But others said it still carries scientific and ethical problems.

Jason Espinal, 22, who attended community college before enrolling in the seminary, was overcome while genuflecting before the Eucharist in the seminary’s chapel on a recent Sunday. He went down on one knee, but then prostrated himself completely.

Like the other students, Mr. Espinal has endured plenty of questions about his decision to pursue the priesthood. Lawyers at a firm where he was working told him it would squelch his personality. A friend told him he thought it was disgusting that he would be living with other priests.

The Bishop of Rome clarified that interreligious prayer meetings do not seek "a religious consensus among ourselves or negotiation of our convictions of faith." Rather, they manifest that "religions can be reconciled at the level of a common commitment in an earthly project that exceeds them all." Thus they are not "a concession to relativism in religious beliefs," contended Benedict XVI.

The sisterhood is a dying way of life in America. Forty years ago,the United States had about 180,000 nuns. Today there are perhaps 70,000. Fewer than 6,000 are younger than 50. There are estimated to be about 5,000 cloistered, contemplative nuns, a piece of women’s history that may be on the way out.

Reasons for the collapse can be traced to the mid-1960’s: the flowering of the women’s movement, which broadened opportunities beyond secretary, housewife, nurse, teacher and nun. But the Roman Catholic Church unintentionally inflicted damage on itself when it ratified the Second Vatican Council.
“Basically it said that religious women were no more holy than lay women,” said Sister Patricia Wittberg, an associate professor of sociology at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. “It was devastating.”

Regarding Call to Action and their meeting in Milwaukee he states:

The third issue has to do with the “Call to Action” conference scheduled for Milwaukee this November. As you may recall, this group, based in Chicago, has been meeting in Milwaukee for decades. This group was actually initiated by the bishops 30 years ago, and started off asking some legitimate questions.

But they have gotten way off track. In this case as well, I inquired some years ago what impact this annual meeting has on the archdiocese, and was told, almost none. Our Catholic people, I was advised, recognize that this is a group that has taken stands totally outside the bounds of church teaching.

Unfortunately, as stated in the official program of this year’s conference, the leadership of that group has decided to include in the program an invitation to invalidly ordained “priests and bishops” to “celebrate a liturgy.”

Here again it becomes my teaching responsibility to state clearly that such an action would make any claim of Catholic identity by the group to be misleading. Faithful Catholics attending these sessions would only promote division and disunity rather than genuine renewal in the church.

People ask why I “allow” Call to Action to meet in Milwaukee. This group, of course, hardly asks my permission, and pays little attention to what any bishop, including the Bishop of Rome, has to say.

Enough of this. Why do I write about it anyway? Because, too often, we are tempted to become myopic, with our only focus on juicy issues that disrupt and distract us from the mission of the Gospel. Don’t get me wrong, I am always open to dialog, and, as I have learned especially during these past four years as your archbishop, one’s temperament for patience grows as one’s leadership role expands.

This information came in an alert from the Family Research Council. Unfortunately, it's not enough to determine the next game plan against the culture of death (Plan B morning after pill), when another attack on life occurs closer to every one's way of life.

Wal-Mart has now 'partnered' with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) announced today a partnership with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing diversity among all of its associate, supplier and customer bases. This partnership will include executive representation on the NGLCC’s Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) and sponsorship of the organization’s 2006 events and initiatives.
As part of Wal-Mart’s involvement with NGLCC, Dee Breazeale, vice president of divisional merchandise, SAM’S CLUB Jewelry, will serve on the organization’s Corporate Advisory Council (CAC). The CAC is composed of NGLCC corporate partners whose mission is to discuss issues upon which members of the NGLCC and CAC work together to educate Corporate America and the public on the economic benefits of providing a diverse workplace and creating mutually beneficial relationships with the LGBT and LGBT-friendly business community.

Maybe thieves wanted no one to fight over the portrait of Christ? Hmmm?

These thieves apparently didn't listen to "Thou shalt not steal."
A portrait of Jesus Christ was taken from Bridgeport (W. Va.) High School on Thursday, two days after the Harrison County School Board agreed to fight court efforts to remove it.
An intruder snatched the painting just before 4 a.m., but left behind the gilded frame and backing, Schools Superintendent Carl Friebel said.
"The picture was the only thing stolen, so the deliberate intent was to steal the picture and only the picture," Friebel said.
The painting, which depicts Jesus in sepia tones on a large canvas, had been at the school for 37 years.
The Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the West Virginia American Civil Liberties Union sued the school board, saying the painting, "Head of Christ," sends the message that the school endorses Christianity as its official religion.

How, if Eileen is getting a divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Seminary? Does this mean she gets to 'float' in and out of the Roman Catholic Church while she is trying to change church policy?

Bush APPROVES Morning After Pill

Disgusted. No words can convey my anger, disappointment, and my shame.

"At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. "Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions," said the reporter. "Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?"
The President replied, "I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision."'

"Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, "President Bush's implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."'
